On May 10th, 2022, Rep. Mulvaney-Stanak spoke in support of JRS.53, a joint resolution supporting transgender youth and their parents who seek essential medical care for the treatment of gender dysphoria. She offered this short statement on the floor of the Vermont House of Representatives. The resolution passed 134 to 5.
"I stand with all LGBTQ+ youth in Vermont as a mom and proud out lesbian and queer legislator. As I’ve said before, language matters and, as such, resolutions matter as they are a statement of values as a legislative body. This resolution acknowledges the past and current harm being done to LGBTQ+ youth, especially our transgender youth, in this country. It also expresses our commitment as a state to support the well being of transgender youth and their families. This type of statement saves lives.
This has been a very difficult time in our country and in Vermont as LGBTQ+ people. It feels unsafe to be our true selves. It is growing harder, not easier, to gain equitable access to health care as LGTBQ+ people. This resolution is a critical message of support to transgender youth in Vermont and as such, I request that when we vote, the vote be taken by roll."
